Consumer Protection

Our founding fathers recognized that the basis of a strong national
economy was a uniform system of weights and measures. This system
is designed to protect both buyers and sellers, and the work to
ensure compliance with weights and measurers standards inspires
confidence and trust in the marketplace.
In 2009, the Auditor’s weights and measures officials conducted
about 7,000 gas pump inspections and over 4,500 package checks,
tested about 2,200 scales and performed scanning tests at over 530
retailers, testing the pricing accuracy of over 37,000 items.
Budget cuts have forced a number of counties in Ohio to scale back
their weights and measures programs. Some have completely eliminated
their programs, and cutbacks have been made in Montgomery County
as well.
Still, Karl Keith remains committed to an active, comprehensive
weights and measures program to ensure fairness and trust in the
marketplace. With all of us forced to watch our spending and many
of us struggling to make ends meet, compliance with uniform commercial
standards could never be more critical.
