Fiscal Responsibility

Karl Keith believes government should be fiscally responsible and
“live within its means.” He has led efforts to control
costs, reduce spending and save taxpayer dollars throughout his
career in public service.
The Auditor’s Office current general fund budget was decreased
by 10% from the previous year and has been reduced to its lowest
level in ten years. Total spending for the office last year was
over $745,000 less than the amount expended in 2001. Much of these
savings have been achieved through a reduction in staff and holding
the line on personnel costs. The Auditor’s Office staff has
been reduced by 9% and cost of living increases for staff have been
foregone for the past two years.
During difficult economic times, it is more important than ever
that local government account for taxpayer dollars accurately and
openly. Under Auditor Keith’s leadership, Montgomery County
has continued to earn the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence
in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers of America,
and in 2010 the county was awarded the “Making Your Tax Dollars
Count” award from the Auditor of State. These awards recognize
Keith’s commitment to full financial disclosure and accurate
accounting of taxpayer dollars.
This sound fiscal management led two leading bond rating agencies
to uphold the county’s strong credit rating. Maintaining this
strong credit rating makes it much cheaper to service the county’s
debt and has saved Montgomery County taxpayers about $4.6 million.
