Expansion of the
Homestead Exemption

Auditor Keith supported Governor Strickland’s
proposed expansion of the Homestead Exemption, providing additional
tax relief to seniors and disabled property owners throughout Ohio.
When the state legislature approved the expansion, Keith became
a regional and statewide leader in promoting the program. He and
his staff developed an aggressive outreach campaign enlisting the
support of dozens of community partners that included churches,
senior citizen organizations and other local government agencies.
As a result of these efforts, over 30,000 new property
owners were signed up to take advantage of the tax savings offered
by the Homestead Exemption in a three-month period. The benefit
to Montgomery County property owners is significant, totaling over
$24 million in tax relief for 2010.
Those receiving the Homestead Exemption have seen
their local real estate taxes reduced by $500 to $600 per year.
Promoting this program and ensuring eligible homeowners receive
these benefits will continue to be a top priority for Auditor Keith.
